International Rice Festival

The International Rice Festival is one of Louisiana's oldest and largest
agricultural festivals. Since the inauguration of the first festival on October 5, 1937,
over seven million people have attended the annual affair. Our celebration serves to call
attention to the importance of rice as food and emphasize its place in the world's
economic picture. The festival takes place in the downtown area of Crowley, La. and is one
of the few festivals held on Friday and Saturday. It is generally held the third weekend
of October. Special events include the Livestock show, Rice Cooking contest, Rice Eating
contest, and the Rice Grading contest. Other events include a Farmers Banquet and Queens
Ball. The Festival features entertainment continuously from early morning till midnight.
Some of the events staged include the Jr. King and Queen contest, French Accordion,
Fiddler, and Harmonica contest frog jumping, and of course, musical entertainment. Also in
conjunction with the festival, is an Arts and Crafts exhibit, which is held adjacent to
the Festival grounds. There are two parades, Friday (children's day), which is the
children's parade, and Saturday, the Grand Parade. The International Rice Festival
continues to be Louisiana's largest and most exciting festival, as is signified by the
large attendance.
