The name Church Point was derived from the original name of the settlement, Plaquemine Brulee and the location of the first chapel. Jesuit missionaries serving the chapel referred to the site as "La Chapelle de La Pointe de Plaquemine Brulee," or Church at the Point. The name was eventually anglicized to Church Point.
Many old timers still refer to the town as "Pointe de l'Eglise." Church Point's claim of the "Buggy Capital of the World" was secured in the 1920's when many people traveled miles to attend services here. They now celebrate it at the Annual Buggy Festival first full week-end of June, is also famous for its Courier de Mardi Gras held the Sunday before the traditional Fat Tuesday. Cajun Wood Stock is held the last Saturday in April to Benefit St. Jude Research Hospital.
