The Birthplace of Louisiana Oil

In September 1901 oil was discovered in Evangeline Louisiana by Howard Brothers Drilling for Jennings Oil Company. With this emerging new industry came the beginning of many new needs. This discovery has bound all Louisianans in some way. The oil discovery influenced the needs for oil explorers, rig suppliers, manpower, rental equipment of many kinds, seismic equipment, drilling additive products, disposal,    transportation, production and resale or oil, gas, and petroleum products. These needs were only a beginning. Many of you have relatives who worked with the early drilling rigs in Evangeline or the surrounding areas. Many families are third and fourth generation oil workers.

Oil & Gas Festival (Exhibits)
In 1998 the church communities of St. Joseph and St. Jules of Evangeline and Tee Mamou began an annual fund raiser to build and maintain a parish reception hall and classrooms for religious education. Each year it has grown in activities and attendance.
This year is the Centennial Celebration of the discovery of oil in Evangeline. During this one hundred years, the industry has made tremendous strides. Now oil an important energy source for all the World.

Cajun Music
Where you find Cajuns there is Cajun music. There are various bands playing throughout the festival. Come to tap your toe, swing your partner or just enjoy the music.

Food / Sweet Shop
There will be a variety of foods from BBQ hamburgers, nachos, and chili fritos for the kids to a Cajun country dinner, and red beans and rice to name a few. As always, to finish off a great dinner will be a sweet shop of assorted delights.

Crafts
Many articles are hand made by area people and there is something for everyone. You can find gifts for all occasions (Birthdays - Mother's Day - Father's Day - Christmas - Easter - etc.).

Souvenirs
Each year screened T-shirts, baseball caps, and other memorabilia are available for sale. As a special offering this year for the Centennial Celebration, there will be a pictorial book of early Evangeline History.
